The Best Workout Is the One You’ll Stick To

CrossFit, Pilates, kickboxing, group classes, aqua-size, bodybuilding…There’s no shortage of options when it comes to fitness.


I remember trying a strength training class awhile ago, and the instructor proudly mentioned that the workout would never be the same and we could expect a totally new routine every class. As someone who has worked in fitness for over a decade, I was curious about the exercises they’d come up with, but I also realized something important: I’m not the person that class is designed for.


Those classes are often built for people who are newer to the gym and looking for guidance with their workouts. So if that’s the case, why are we asking them to learn completely new movements every single session, and expecting them to perform those movements safely and effectively?


That’s when a second realization came to me: a lot of exercise is designed for exercise professionals, not real people.


As a self-proclaimed exercise nerd, I can safely say that we can get caught up in trying new things, experimenting, and constantly “dialling it in”. But for the people we are supposed to be helping, this creates an endless learning curve. It becomes a cycle of starting over, trying this and that without ever building real consistency.


Effective exercise doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be simple, repetitive, and even infrequent, which is exactly what makes it sustainable.


Simple training reduces the barrier to entry. It makes it easier to show up, stay consistent, and perform movements safely and well. You’re not constantly guessing or learning from scratch, you’re building skill, confidence, and strength over time.


The most important part? The research absolutely supports this.


The latest position stand from the American College of Sports Medicine reinforces that simple, consistent resistance training is enough to see meaningful results. They recommend two full body strength training workouts per week with a focus on effort and proper guidance.

So instead of chasing the newest trend or the most exciting workout, focus on what you can actually stick with. Keep it simple, work hard, and show up regularly.


Because the best workout isn’t the most advanced one, it’s the one you’ll still be doing a year from now… Or 10 years from now!
